One of the major causes leading to increasing problems with Hospital-Acquired-Infections (HAI) concerns ineffective cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and medical equipment in healthcare institutions. Multi-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) become an increasing issue for healthcare institutions given the lack of antimicrobial activity of commonly used disinfectants. As a matter of fact, these multi-resistant microorganisms develop an increasing resistance against conventional disinfection solutions.

Moreover, healthcare personnel often fail to fully act according to recommendation guidelines from disinfection manufacturers thus, providing a thriving habitat for these highly dangerous microorganisms. Another problem attributed to using toxic disinfectants such as quaternary ammonium is that healthcare personnel often develop respiratory illness, such as asthma.

Microorganisms naturally occurring in water settle and proliferate in water systems and build colonies.

Biofilms are an accumulation of various microorganisms, as well as organic and inorganic matter on wet surfaces. In drinking water systems, biofilms are an optimal breeding ground for microorganisms that can affect human- and animal health significantly.
A permanent disinfection of drinking water pipes with SECADIS anolyte improves the drinking water quality by removing existing biofilms and preventing the buildup of new ones.

Legionella prevention
Biofilms in water systems and stagnation of water carry the risk of poor drinking water quality and growth of hazardous microorganisms in various hot and cold-water systems, such as in hotels, medical institutions, public buildings, cooling towers, industrial plants and farming.

Caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, legionnaires’ disease is a severe pneumonia with an annual infection rate of several thousands in Europe. The key to prevention is the removal of biofilms and Legionella from hot and cold-water systems.

At low temperatures up to 20°C Legionella bacteria survive but are inactive. They have their optimal growth in warm waters from 20°C to 45°C. At temperatures above 70°C, instant death of the bacteria occurs.

Therefore, a common disinfection method to combat Legionella is thermic disinfection. Water pipes are flushed for 3 minutes with 70°C hot water to kill the bacteria. This treatment method demonstrates various disadvantages and is often insufficient. It is not able to remove biofilms, and consequently rapid recolonization with Legionella is likely.

Thermic disinfection runs the risk of Legionella bacteria entering a hibernation mode and surviving high temperatures. Thus, they are developing resistance against high temperatures and make thermic disinfection ineffective. So far, no microbial resistance against ECA products has been reported.

Chickens host large quantities of a variety of microorganisms on feathers, feet, skin and in the intestines. During poultry processing, microorganisms are largely distributed on the surface of the carcase and are further spread during scalding, defeathering and evisceration. Pathogens commonly associated with poultry are Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia, campylobacter, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes.
